Japanese Earthquake Shifted Earth’s Axis 10cm

According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology the earthquake in Japan this morning, which caused hundreds of casualties, “would have shifted the axis of rotation of the Earth nearly 10 cm.

A note explains that the INGV the impact of this event on the axis of rotation was much greater even than that of the great Sumatra earthquake of 2004 and probably second only to Chile earthquake of 1960.
