Residents were able to return home Saturday morning as officials lifted a mandatory evacuation that had been in place since late Friday afternoon due to the cleanup from Thursday’s trail derailment.

Officials said that the evacuation had been lifted and residents were able to retun to their homes around 7:30 Saturday morning after cleanup crews worked throughout the night to remove debris and possible hazardous materials from the area. Late Friday afternoon, about 100 people had to be evacuated as crews worked to remove a train car filled with a chemical called TDI off the tracks. The chemical still remains in the area, but is in a train car that has been removed from the tracks awaiting removal to another container.

The academy, calling it ‘the most comprehensive report ever on climate change,’ suggests taxing carbon emissions. The papers also raise the possibility that global warming might make it necessary to shift vulnerable populations away from coasts.

In a sharp change from its cautious approach in the past, the National Academy of Sciences on Wednesday called for taxes on carbon emissions, a cap-and-trade program for such emissions or some other strong action to curb runaway global warming.
